Billboard’s “The Hot 100” #1 Singles of 1984 – Ranked

Billboard1984 Featured

Every year, songs shoot to the top of the charts, either for just one week, or for multiple weeks in a row. In a series of posts, we’re going to rank Billboard’s “The Hot 100” number one singles for each year of the 1980s and 1990s. Today, we’re looking at the year 1984.

Note: “Say Say Say” by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson started the year at number one, but it had previously also done so in 1983, and as is our rule, we will not include it here, since it was already included in our list for 1983.

As always, these lists are subjective, we’re not claiming to be the definitive ranking here. We’re not that important, but you are, so we hope seeing the below songs conjures up a friendly memory or two.

But first, to get you in the mood for the year 1984…

  3. The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, CA — as a retaliation for the US boycotting the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Soviet Union boycotted these 1984 games.
  4. The first-ever MTV Video Music Awards was held — Madonna famously performed “Like a Virgin” wearing a combination bustier/wedding gown and her trademark “Boy Toy” belt.
  5. In April, the National Cancer Institute announced they had found the cause of AIDS, a retrovirus that would later be named the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

19. Duran Duran - The Reflex

This song became Duran Duran’s most successful single, and was the first of their singles to reach the top of the US charts.

18. Lionel Richie - Hello

The third single from Richie’s second solo album, “Hello” made it to number one on two other Billboard charts: the R&B chart, and the adult contemporary chart.

17. Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

The song won Best British Single at the 1984 Brit Awards, and is the only one of their songs to reach number one on the Hot 100 chart.

16. Deniece Williams - Let's Hear it for the Boy

Featured on the Footloose soundtrack, this song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

15. Prince and the Revolution - Let's Go Crazy

This song was both the opening song on the album Purple Rain, as well as the film, and was notable for opening with a funeral-like organ solo.

14. Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters

Written as the theme song for the Ghostbusters film, Huey Lewis and the News sued for plagiarism of their song “I Want a New Drug” — Lewis ended up receiving a settlement.

13. Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

George Michael was inspired by a note his bandmate Andrew Ridgeley had left for his parents, intended to read “wake me up before you go” but with “up” accidentally written twice, so Ridgeley wrote “go” twice on purpose.

12. Kenny Loggins - Footloose

Featured in the opening title sequence for Footloose, the song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and is one of Loggins’ most recognizable songs.

11. Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart

Though Yes had released 10 studio albums prior to the one that featured this single (and many since), it’s their only song to reach number one on the Hot 100 chart.

10. Stevie Wonder - I Just Called to Say I Love You

Wonder’s best-selling single to date, this song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the film The Woman in Red.

9. Daryl Hall and John Oates - Out of Touch

The last single from Hall and Oates to reach number one, Oates said he came up with the chorus of this song while randomly playing around with a synthesizer he didn’t know how to use.

8. Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)

This single was Collins’ first to make it to number one on the Hot 100 chart, though as of early 2021 he has had seven total throughout his career.

7. Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)

The song was recorded under different titles for different parts of the world—resulting in versions such as “European Queen” and “African Queen”.

6. Tina Turner - What's Love Got to Do with It

Interestingly, this song is the only one from Turner to make it to the number one spot on the Hot 100, and at the time, at age 44, she was the oldest solo female artist to have topped the chart.

5. Madonna - Like a Virgin

Co-writer Billy Steinberg has said that the song wasn’t written for any female singer in particular, but rather was inspired by his own personal experiences, and was originally intended to be a ballad.

4. Van Halen - Jump

“Jump” was a departure from the band’s more typical hard rock tunes, and became their most successful single.

3. John Waite - Missing You

Though this is John Waite’s most well-known single as a solo artist, he also was the lead vocalist for the bands The Babys and Bad English.

2. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

Though this song would become a signature for Lauper, it was actually one of the last ones recorded for her debut album.

1. Prince - When Doves Cry

Prince wrote and composed this song after all the other tracks were complete on Purple Rain, and in addition to providing vocals, he played all instruments on the track.
